(NewsNation) — Drug manufacturer ARMR Sciences announced this week that its experimental fentanyl vaccine showed promise in early-stage human trials, potentially offering a new tool to help prevent fatal overdoses.
Dr. Kristen Gilliland, a neuroscientist who lost her 22-year-old son to an accidental overdose, told “Elizabeth Vargas Reports” she views the vaccine “as a tool in the harm reduction toolbox” for people in recovery.
“So if by chance they did relapse, and it was fentanyl, we could actually save their life,” Gilliland said but cautioned that it wouldn’t affect cravings.
Gilliland said the vaccine combines a “portion of fentanyl” with “carrier proteins” to create “anti-fentanyl” antibodies. If fentanyl is taken, those antibodies can bind to the opioid and block it from getting to the brain, preventing an overdose.
