Gregory Cuny, PhD

Gregory D. Cuny, PhD, is Professor of Medicinal Chemistry & Drug Discovery and Interim Department Chair of the Department of Pharmacological and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Houston. He is a founding leader of the University of Houston Drug Discovery Institute, where he advances translational therapeutic development across multiple disease areas.

Dr. Cuny specializes in medicinal chemistry, small-molecule design, and structure-based drug discovery, with expertise spanning target identification, lead optimization, and IND-enabling development. He has led multidisciplinary teams integrating chemistry, biology, and pharmacology to accelerate innovative therapeutics from early discovery through preclinical advancement.

He earned his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). With extensive experience in federally funded research and academic–industry collaboration, Dr. Cuny plays a central role in strengthening drug development pipelines and advancing mechanism-driven therapeutic platforms.
